Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is the disease where the conjunctiva of the eyes get inflamed. They are commonly termed ‘pink eye’ or ‘Madras eye’. It is characterized by redness of the eyes and swelling in the eyes. There will be yellowish discharge from the eyes. Conjunctivitis may happen due to viral infections or bacterial infection. The disease generally develop in summers in countries where there is humid temperature. The conjunctivitis is air borne disease and hence communicable.

On the onset of the infection, for the first two days, there would be only slight redness in the eye. Then when the condition worsens, the eye would be blood red and there will be high irritation that is felt in the eyes. In some extreme conditions, they may even have a burning sensation. Conjunctivitis can spread really fast as the disease is air borne. It is advised that the person infected with conjunctivitis should stay away from others and avoid spreading the disease. It is also recommended that they wear plain eyeglasses so that the disease does not spread easily to others in family or work area or to people who are nursing the infected.
